Fumaça from above hike overview
We begin our adventure early, leaving Lençóis around 8 AM for a 2-hour drive to the charming Capão Valley, the starting point of the Fumaça from Above trail.
The trek covers about 6 kilometers and starts with a 30-minute uphill climb to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the valley, a first taste of the grand scale of Chapada Diamantina.
We then continue across the plateau for about another hour, walking through landscapes that shift between native vegetation and small wetland areas, always accompanied by the scent of cerrado flowers and a refreshing breeze.
At the end of the trail, we reach the highlight of the day: the edge of the massive canyon from which the Fumaça from Above waterfall drops. The view is awe-inspiring, 340 meters of vertical fall, where the water is often blown back upwards by the wind, creating the famous “smoke effect,” a magical mist that gives the waterfall its name.
After soaking in the view, we take a relaxing picnic break by the Fumaça stream, where those who wish can take a quick dip in the cool waters.
On the way back, we stop at Riachinho Waterfall, a perfect spot for one last refreshing swim before returning to Lençóis.
This Fumaça from Above 1-day trek combines hiking, jaw-dropping views, and the chance to witness one of Brazil’s most iconic waterfalls, perfect for those seeking an unforgettable experience in the heart of Chapada Diamantina.
Total Hiking Distance: 12 km
Starting Elevation: 990 m
Highest Point: 1340 m
Lowest Point: 990 m
Important Information: The Fumaça Waterfall dries up during several months of the year, during which the flow and the "smoke effect" cannot be seen. However, even in these dry periods, the landscapes are stunning, and the viewpoints remain exceptional.
