Sossego Hike Overview
We depart from the agency around 8 AM, while the sun is still gentle. First, we stop in the city center so everyone can purchase his own picnic. Afterwards, we leave the town and head towards the trailhead, which begins by crossing large stone slabs scattered with a dry vegetation adapted to extreme heat and aridity.
After about an hour of walking, we approach the river, and the landscape begins to change. We enter the Sossego Canyon, where the trail fades, and we start walking directly in the riverbed, hopping from stone to stone. This part of the hike is more challenging and requires good balance as well as a good physical condition, which is why the Sossego hike is recommended for those with prior hiking experience.
We continue through the canyon for another hour until, around a bend, we finally see the magnificent cascade of Sossego. We've reached our destination! The first instinct is to dive into the water and swim toward the waterfall. Adventurous souls can also dive from high rocks into the pool and pass behind the waterfall into a small cave to contemplate a rainbow forming in the water veil. The guide will also take you to a higher viewpoint that offers a different perspective of the waterfall.
On the return trip, we descend the river and stop at the natural pool of Ribeirão de Cima, and later on, Ribeirão do Meio, a pool famous for its 100-meter-long natural rock slide. Sliding down the last 10 meters of it is a lot of fun, though it might jolt your lower back a little! After this final refreshing swim, the guide leads us back to town on an easy 40-minute trail.
