Mixila Trek overview
The adventure begins at 6 AM with a 4x4 vehicle ride to the Capivara River, arriving after a 30-minute drive on dirt roads. We start with a 1.5-hour ascent over rocky terrain, followed by another hour of hiking along a flatter, undulating trail through scrub vegetation.
Upon reaching the base camp, the guide prepares a quick breakfast while everyone enjoys a refreshing dip in the river. After the meal, we leave most of our belongings at the camp and enter the Mixila Canyon, wearing just our swimsuits. It’s best to enter the canyon in the morning due to its eastern exposure. We proceed carefully over the slippery rocks, crossing the river swimming a few times, as walking along one bank continuously is not possible.
After about 1.5 hours of this “swim-hiking,” we finally see the stunning Mixila Waterfall as it comes into view around a bend in the canyon. It’s an enchanting sight, with its delicate, lace-like curtain of water shimmering in the midday sun. We spend ample time here, swimming in the Mixila basin and soaking in the magic of the place. Eventually, we return to the base camp, where the guide prepares a hearty picnic lunch while the group cools off at the nearby river.
After lunch, if time allows, we may visit the Capivari Waterfall (15 meters) and its large natural pool, adding a 4-kilometer round trip detour. After this last adventure, we begin our return down the valley along the same path, once again reaching the Capivara River. At the end of the hike, those who wish can enjoy a final swim before boarding the 4x4 for the 30-minute ride back to Lençóis.
